Fitzsimmon’s Creek Debris Barrier
Whistler, Canada
The barrier structure consists of two geogrid reinforced soil (GRS) walls which channel the flow into a 12 m wide central passage, furnished with a steel grillage. The steel grillage is designed to retain 34,000 m3 of debris and the impact from 2.8 tonne boulders and 1 m diameter tree stumps travelling at 5 m/s.
GEA was responsible for the preliminary and detailed design of the steel grillage including the concrete abutments and interfacing with the GRS walls, as well as construction support services and field reviews. Overall design management by Kerr Wood Leidal Associates Ltd.
This project was a 2010 Consulting Engineers of BC Award of Merit winner.
