Bear Cove Ferry Terminal Apron Modifications

Port Hardy, British Columbia, Canada

The terminal serves three vessels. Each apron required a different configuration for the required angle of 270°. The solution adopted comprised attaching a torque beam to the end of the ramp, onto which two hydraulically powered rotary actuators could be fastened. The actuator control logic allows the apron to be held in any position within the arc of swing, or to “float” freely.

GEA was responsible for analysis of the performance characteristics for the apron, investigation of seven different solution concepts and recommendation of the most appropriate one, three-dimensional analysis of the apron under various operating conditions and positions, and detailed design of the new actuator components.
